Earwigs

Size, colour & shape:

The main earwig identification is their pincers or forceps on the back of the abdomen. The males have large strong curved pincers and the females are straight. These insects can be 1 1/4 inches long, shiny brown/ black bodies with long antennae.

Where Found:

Usually found outside in the garden. If they come in as an intruder, they can be found in cracks and crevices around doors and skirting boards.

Ants

Size, colour & shape:

Common ants are shiny black and around 2-3 mm in length with a characteristic pinched waist.

Where Found:

Usually ants will make nests in your garden at the bottom of walls or cracks in patios. They will emerge late summer in swarms of flying ants.

Fleas

Size, colour & shape:

Fleas are very small, usually black or reddish brown, with long hind legs which they use to jump. They can be difficult to spot as they are very quick.

Where Found:

Usually, they can be found on your pet or within your carpets, pet beds and soft furnishings.

Cockroaches

Size, colour & shape:

These insects are oval in shape with long antennae. They are often brown/ yellow in colour and around 10 – 23 mm in length in the UK.

Where Found:

As a nocturnal insect, they will often only be spotted at night. They can usually be found around sinks, in cracks around drainage or behind cookers.

Bed Bugs

Size, colour & shape:

Around the size of an apple seed, they are round insects that are orange/ brown in colour.

Where Found:

Usually around the seams of a mattress. They can also be spotted in curtains, soft furnishing and around the headboard.

Silverfish

Size, colour & shape:

These insects are silvery blue, with a distinctive carrot-shaped body and long antennae. They are around 12mm in length.

Where Found:

They like to feed on paper, books, wallpaper, clothing, and so they can usually be found around these items in the home, causing a great amount of damage.

Carpet Beetle

Size, colour & shape:

These beetles have an elongated oval body shape at around 4-6 mm long. They are very dark brown/ black.

Where Found:

Their larvae will eat and damage carpets and other fabrics within the house. Their damage can sometimes be mistaken for that of the clothing or carpet moth.

Carpet Moth

Size, colour & shape:

Carpet moths are light brown with mottled wings. These small moths with a wingspan of around 14 – 18mm.

Where Found:

Their larvae will feed on natural fibres. Carpets are usually affected the most by the carpet moth.

Clothing Moth

Size, colour & shape:

The moth is a grey colour with a wingspan of 12- 17mm. The larvae are white and have a hardened, brown head.

Where Found:

Usually found within wardrobes, the larvae like to feed on natural fibres like silk, wool, leather and more, putting your clothes at risk.

Wasps

Size, colour & shape:

Small in size (unless it’s a queen), distinctive black and yellow striped body and long antennae. They will have a characteristic pinched waist.

Where Found:

Their nests are usually found in attics and roof spaces. They are grey, giving a papery appearance. Wasps themselves usually seek out sweet/ sugary foods, but will go for anything.

Hornets

Size, colour & shape:

Much larger than a wasp, hornets are more of a yellowish brown with black stripes.

Where Found:

Similar to wasps, they will make their nests high up on buildings or in roof spaces and attics. Hornets differ from wasps because they don’t display the same level of scavenging behaviours.

Size, colour & shape:

Common house flies are small and ash grey/ black in colour. Blue bottles are larger with a distinctive iridescent blue body.

Where Found:

Both flies will lay their eggs in old food waste, bins, deceased animals, pet waste and more. You may spot maggots in your bins or on old food.

Spiders

Size, colour & shape:
